I remember a while ago — back when Harry was still at ClearleftRichard brought Poppy the beagle into the office.

Poppy has one blue eye and one brown eye. I made some comment along the lines of “I love her David Bowie eyes!”

“You know”, said Harry, “that David Bowie’s eyes didn’t actually start out like that.”

“Really?” I said.

“Yeah,” said Harry. “Actually, my wife’s dad went to school with David Bowie.”

“Oh, wow!” I said.

“Yeah. They were in a band together”, said Harry.

“No way!”

“In fact, they got into a fight one time …about a girl. And Mia’s dad punched David Bowie in the face. Well, the eye, actually.”

“Bull. Shit!” I said, and immediately checked with Wikipedia:

“Bowie received a serious injury at school in 1962 when his friend George Underwood punched him in the left eye during a fight over a girl. Doctors feared he would become blind in that eye. After a series of operations during a four-month hospitalisation, his doctors determined that the damage could not be fully repaired and Bowie was left with faulty depth perception and a permanently dilated pupil. Despite their altercation, Underwood and Bowie remained good friends, and Underwood went on to create the artwork for Bowie’s early albums.”

I think this means I am four degrees of separation away from punching David Bowie in the face.
